For Milan Design Week 2025: JUNG, a manufacturer of building technology, invites you to an interactive installation entitled ATMOSPHERE. A monumental sphere adorned with over 700 JUNG light switches, which control the room’s lighting, smoke effects, video and sound. An integral part of the concept is the graphic design of the sphere and the room. Moreover, a new collection was launched in parallel: ‘JUNG UNIQUE × Ippolito Fleitz Group’.

A triad of lettering

ATMOSPHERE is intended to evoke emotions and awaken old memories, as well as creating new ones for visitors. We quickly realised that music would be an important part of the installation. So we invited our team to suggest songs that they personally associate with the theme of light. Next, we chose suitable typography for presenting the song lyrics graphically. To achieve this, we merged characters from three very different font families: The result is a playful dance of letters emerging from the strict Neue Haas Grotesk, the silhouette-like Slibinas and the amorphous Superficial fonts.

Let’s swing

The shapes derived from the product and the space complement this character set. The iconic JUNG LS 990 switch is reduced to two slender squares nestled inside each other. Irregular vertical line structures reference the curtain panels that enclose the space. The ATMOSPHERE light switch sphere represents a circle. All these elements are set to vibrate, creating free organic forms. This combination of letters and shapes forms the graphic basis for various applications.

Typography becomes the central design element in »JUNG UNIQUE x Ippolito Fleitz Group«, transforming switches into charismatic communication surfaces. The reference to iconic song lyrics and the strong graphic language give each surface a unique identity. The ability to shape spaces with individual, expressive controls is particularly impressive. The consistent fusion of function and emotional depth stands out.

A collection worth collecting!

The result is fifteen different switch designs for the ‘JUNG UNIQUE × Ippolito Fleitz Group’ collection. Some are exuberantly format-filling, while others are more restrained; each one displays a song lyric. The square shape, combined with the expressive typography, is reminiscent of record covers and awakens the collector’s instinct. Visitors to ATMOSPHERE can indulge this instinct right away: All of the switch designs in the collection are available as Post-it notes to take away. They stick to smooth surfaces electrostatically, allowing you to try them out at home without leaving a sticky residue.

The graphic set on the large ATMOSPHERE sphere scales in all directions: It figures as a single motif on a solo switch, a word puzzle consisting of multiple letters, or a large-format image spread across dozens of switch units. Symbols and words encourage visitors to interact with the switches and change the space: Ah!
Graphics and typography were also used for invitations and adverts in pre-event communication, as well as for website landing pages and info boards in the space.
