20-year anniversary of Wechselraum

For two decades, the freelance architects of Baden-Württemberg have gathered under the umbrella of the BDA Baden-Württemberg, an association dedicated to shaping and sharing architectural discourse. Twenty years ago, the state chapter set out to create a physical venue for this exchange. The result was Wechselraum: a dynamic space for exhibitions, panel discussions, book launches and networking events. More than 150 public events have been held here, each contributing to an evolving conversation around architecture. Since the beginning, our studio has supported the series with media and publications that reflect its identity.

At its inception, we sought a ‘robust grid’, a design capable of enduring change while lending a distinct visual coherence. We found it in the room’s floor plan, defined by two characteristic rectangular zones. The longevity of the concept speaks for itself; the grid remains the foundation of the visual system today. To mark the 20th anniversary, a compact exhibition presents 105 postcards. Installed as a chronological ribbon along the walls, they recount two decades of ideas, distinguished guests and conversations that have shaped Wechselraum. The graphic motifs are as diverse as the themes explored, yet remain unmistakably tied to the identity of the series.
