Work-Life-Synergy

Brainhouse247

Our working world is in a constant process of rapid and permanent change: Work is becoming increasingly flexible and mobile, the search for intrinsic meaning is ever more important, and the definition of a healthy work-life balance is being renegotiated. There doesn’t need to be an insurmountable divide between work and private life – on the contrary! Rather, our aim should be to dissolve this perceived duality and create life-work spaces that focus on the question: How do I want to live and work in order to lead a fulfilled existence? A challenge that BRAINHOUSE247 is happy to meet: In Laatzen (Hanover), we have designed a space for the brand in which learning, health and community are at the centre. We have designed an exciting landscape with a diverse range of offers that activates users, initiates moments of discovery and in which constant change becomes a visible part of the spatial structure.

Breaking down boundaries – negotiating work and life playfully

On around 20,000 square metres and five floors of a former Siemens office building, we have used intelligent conversion measures to create an innovative live-work space that allows for a broad spectrum of hybrid diversity and can therefore be adapted to a wide range of wishes and needs. To underline the fact that work is not just about sitting behind a desk, but should be understood as a triad of health, lifelong learning and social encounters, an agile opportunity space was created that invites free use at any time of the day – an energetic landscape with inspiring places where the tenants of BRAINHOUSE247 have the freedom to constantly reformulate their concept of work in addition to a wide range of functional offerings. At the same time, fresh opportunities to gain new impulses are ever present.

These include a Maker Space that encourages hands-on crafting (be it sewing, 3D printing or prototyping), studios for recording podcasts, films or music, and a games area that offers all ages the chance to hone their cognitive skills: from board games, some of which are home-grown, billiards and classic arcade machines, to a virtual golf course for league-level e-sports. There are also activities  that take the ‘poetry of work’ to the extreme and break habitual behaviour patterns: Rooms where you can shout out loud and release aggression if necessary; rooms that make you foggy so that you can see clearly again afterwards; and rooms that ensure absolute peace and tranquillity thanks to their Zen-like atmosphere. The concept is complemented by an event space and a campus with stimulating and varied programmes that promote exchange and continuous professional development. Whether you’re a student, a start-up founder or part of a big company, all target groups are offered stimulating opportunities that encourage unexpected encounters and intensify communication around the clock.

Thinking ahead at work – shaping relationships

Hospitality areas on every level complete the picture: from a breakfast club to a café with outside space to a fine dining restaurant. As well as being used for traditional gastronomy, they can also be configured as meeting places, conference rooms or co-working spaces. Flexible spaces, such as the new, spacious Social Stair, can be transformed on the fly into stages or communication platforms. Finally, dedicated areas such as the IT helpdesk and in-house mailroom provide added value and make everyday life easier.

Always on the move – living diversity

To make it easier to integrate health and wellness into your daily routine, there is a fitness centre and a spa, as well as rooms for regular health checks. And for those who prefer to exercise at work, there are walk & talk areas, ceiling rings and climbing bars. In this way, work is embedded in a natural process – in a diverse and dynamic place where individuals (as a team) can meet to develop freely and enrich each other; a place where everyone feels a sense of belonging and can constantly reconceptualise work on their own terms.

And let’s not forget the actual workplaces themselves. But here, too, we see the different worlds – whether for concentration, contemplation, collaboration or communication – as a ‘playground of possibilities’ that can be used to renegotiate work. We want to answer a question that we all keep asking ourselves: Why do people go to the office at all? The answer is obvious: not because the desk is particularly aesthetic or the meeting island inviting, but because it’s a place to meet in person. A place to enter into relationships and use the spaces in between to share knowledge and experience, to drive innovation together in planned and unplanned discussions, to exploit creative friction, to question the old, to create the new and to initiate change.

Not finished at last – rethinking change

To bring the concept of constant change to life in the space, we developed an aesthetic concept for the existing 1970s building that clearly illustrates how we are all in a constant state of flux and never finished. Change should be seen as a positive thing and integrated into our own actions and thinking. Accordingly, the walls are unpapered or left raw, the ceiling grids are open, pipes remain visible, the existing tiles on the walls and floor have been retained and not completed. The balance between value and appreciation is evident in every detail: the existing has its own charm and quality – what can be further developed opens up countless possibilities. For example, old ventilation shafts were opened up, lounges were installed and the 15-metre-high space above was made accessible in a new way. Pleasant acoustics, the integration of lush planting and the use of sustainable materials also ensure a good working and indoor climate.

Our versatile and dynamic design has created memorable places with different atmospheres on each floor, providing not only orientation but also identification. The interior design is based on a light-hearted seriousness and invites you to discover things, spaces and formats for yourself in every situation, and to understand BRAINHOUSE247 as a platform of unlimited possibilities. These possibilities have been translated into a graphic language that runs through the building like a comic-like thread. Large-format graffiti has been sprayed directly onto the walls, again emphasising the raw directness of the design concept.

1 + 1 = 3

In order to develop sustainable working environments into relational landscapes, we need places with open-use concepts: spaces that invite us to develop them anew and afresh. We require typologies that defy clear categorisation, because they have many definitions while managing the balancing act between personality and adaptability, between identity and agility. This is where BRAINHOUSE247 comes in: The live-work space offers a concept that promotes dynamism, puts people and their needs at the centre and creates exciting interfaces and free spaces with a dense offer. The meeting of different energies creates absolute added value, and it becomes clear that one plus one doesn’t always have to be two, but can be so much more ...
