Tailor-Made!

BOSS: 3D-Print Façade

BOSS was seeking an innovative idea for the façade of its freshly remodelled BOSS store in İstinye Park, Istanbul. Mirroring the exclusivity of a bespoke suit, the store’s outer skin should be a perfect fit and the concept should be easily transferable to other points of sale. The result is a flexibly scalable, iconic façade that was produced sustainably in collaboration with pioneering 3D printing company Aectual (Amsterdam).

Technology and design sustainably interwoven

Drawing our inspiration from BOSS apparel, the design features the intricate wefts and warps of woven textiles. Our first step was to derive a three-dimensional graphic structure that functions as a repeat and can therefore be rolled out onto any surface size. We then searched for a suitable material. Due to the richness of detail and the striking spatial effect of the structure, it quickly became clear that 3D printing was the ideal production method.

Following some initial experiments with stainless steel – ultimately too heavy, too imprecise and overly susceptible to weathering – the 3D pioneers from Aectual came back with the right solution. Their 3D print uses a recyclable plastic that can be returned to Aectual after use for reprinting. The material is lightweight, weather-resistant and flame-retardant (B-S1), which enables its use outdoors and inside shopping malls.

Next, the 3D-printed fabric was suspended within a metal frame and mounted onto the façade. It covers the entire building front like a second skin with a gentle outward curve towards the bottom, reinforcing the three-dimensional appearance of the structure. The underlying building façade is clad in limestone slabs, incised with rippling, irregular lines. The overall impression is that of a light and airy spatial fabric that evokes the luxury garments sold within.

Despite the open-mesh structure, the curve of the façade grid casts shadows that draw patterns on the envelope of the building, as well as on the floor inside. Moreover, the shade has a cooling effect, improving the indoor climate.

For the BOSS store in Istanbul, we interlocked 136 individual pieces to create an overall surface area of 73 square metres, making it the largest 3D-print project that our studio has tackled to date. We thereby demonstrate how innovative, eco-friendly production processes can be implemented in architectural projects. With its iconic look and supreme scalability, our BOSS façade is breaking new ground in luxury retail architecture.
