Bodman Thermal Spa

This design, created in 2006, was part of a concept study for a spa on Lake Constance that we developed in collaboration with LBBW Immobilien. The project was never realised.

Nevertheless, some designs never lose their relevance. They reflect ideas that continue to influence our work to this day.

A place between lake and countryside

Bodman lies where the lake gradually merges into the surrounding countryside. Situated away from the main tourist routes, the town has retained a special quality: tranquillity.
This tranquillity forms the basis of the design. Rather than being conceived as a standalone structure on the shore, the thermal spa is part of the landscape. It evolves from the topography, embracing its lines and extending them. Here, the architecture expands the public space, connecting the lake, the town, and the landscape to create a cohesive experience.

The accessible roof becomes a public vantage point and balcony overlooking the lake, providing a meeting place for residents and visitors alike.

Water without a prescribed ritual

Traditionally, thermal baths follow a clearly defined narrative structure. Our design deliberately challenges this principle. Water is not understood as a function, but as a medium. Each visit creates its own unique interplay of warmth and coolness, seclusion and community, and interior and exterior spaces.

It is a landscape for the senses

The thermal baths are not conceived as a building, but as a sensory landscape. Water, light, materials, temperature and atmosphere come together to create an open choreography that each visitor experiences individually.

Order creates freedom

The architecture follows a simple, almost archaic order. Square volumes structure the building. Rather than signposts, it is the space itself that provides orientation. The architecture provides a clearly legible framework that allows the space to be rediscovered time and again.

Space for personal experiences

The Bodman Thermal Spa does not view architecture as a means of creating the perfect experience. Instead, it provides a sense of direction without dictating how people should behave. The architecture does not prescribe a particular path. Instead, it invites visitors to find their own way. It creates a space in which personal experiences can unfold.
