When Clara Ritter invented the chocolate square in 1932 after she noticed that standard rectangular bars did not fit into the sports jackets that were commonly worn at the time without breaking, the foundation stone was laid for one of Germany’s best-known confectionary brands. Another revolutionary decision was made by Alfred Otto Ritter in 1974, when he assigned each variety its own distinctive colour and had advertising posters proclaim:
Everything is getting more colourful, happier, more modern, more active – including the chocolate that goes with it.
Today, Ritter Sport is known to 99 percent of German consumers and is exported to over 100 countries around the world. The company is still driven by the innovative spirit that Clara and Alfred Otto Ritter displayed. Ritter Sport rightly sees itself as a “start-up with 100 years’ experience”.
