Solar Shuttle

The Solar Shuttle has been in service as a ferry on the Lake of Constance since 1999 and connects Germany, Switzerland and Austria. For many bicyclists, the ferry has become a tourist attraction. However, the Solar Shuttle is also frequently booked for exclusive events and private parties. It can accommodate up to 60 passengers.
The ferry’s drive is an electric engine, which obtains its energy from solar cells, which form the transparent roof of the Shuttle. Batteries under the deck make sure that ferry rides continue safely on cloudy days or at night. The design was inspired by topics such as the sun, natural energy, light and transparency. Its low noise and zero carbon dioxide emissions operation make the Solar Shuttle an environmentally friendly mode of transportation boasting ecological sustainability and solid design work in perfect harmony. Experiencing solar technology hands-on is an inspiring adventure for everyone from pupils to the environmental ministers. Additional solar shuttles are in service in Hamburg, Hanover and London.

The design was inspired by topics such as the sun, natural energy, light and transparency.
