Strolling from the comfort of your couch
Honouring exceptional architecture is the leitmotif of the Hugo Häring Prize, which is awarded every three years. It has been presented by the Association of German Architects (Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA Baden-Württemberg) since 1969 and is one of the most significant architectural awards in the province. Part of the award is a book series that takes you on a visual journey through the architectural landscape of Baden-Württemberg. The winners of the Hugo Häring Prize, the Hugo Häring State Prize and the Hugo Häring Newcomer Prize are displayed here in more than 400 pages. Thanks to a wealth of descriptive copy, colour photographs and floorplan documentation, these exceptional projects can now be experienced as a coffee table book at home. A new website for the architectural prize has been designed in parallel. Based on the underlying design concept, 25 additional individual publications will be issued for the respective BDA district groups, both in print and online.

New Building – New Thinking
Before you can embark on building something new, you first have to think anew. What was once Hugo Häring’s maxim is now the leitmotif in the design for the book series. Taking pleasure in challenging norms and questioning precedents, a design was developed that invites the reader to engage: with spaces, cubic volumes, floor plans and spatial effect. With geometry, scale and craftsmanship. And of course with colour schemes. The experience begins before the book is even opened: From volume to volume, a large die cut area illustrates that tearing down the old and building the new were never as closely aligned as they were in the Bauhaus. And that it requires courage to fill in the gaps. And of course that any promise of eternity can only lie in change. Thus the die cut shape incised in the book cover changes from edition to edition. What remains is a love of architecture.
